
Geneva Woode
Bio
Geneva Woode has devoted her entire life to the performing arts as a pianist, composer, and instructor. During her accomplished career, which she began when she was still in her teens, Geneva has collaborated with and performed alongside numerous musicians, including The Temptations, James Brown, Odetta, John Clayton, Norman Johns, Sylvia Goldsmith, Wayne Cochran, and Carmen DeLeone.
Geneva, her sister Denise Kinard Crawley, and their late cousin Roberta DuBois were known as the Sisters of Righteous and had their own hits, such as "That's How I Feel," "Is My Loving Too Slow," and "Hold On To What You Got," in addition to singing background for James Brown at King Records.
She attended the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), where she graduated with two Bachelor of Music degrees in music instruction and piano. She has also finished her coursework at CCM for her Master of Music in music theory.
Geneva has also worked as the assistant pianist for the Middletown Symphony, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and the Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra. Geneva has had the distinction of serving as the music minister for two local churches. Over the past 32 years, she has also placed a lot of emphasis on the role of education. Geneva has worked for the Cincinnati Public Schools as both a Certified Gifted and Talented Lead Teacher and Department Chairperson for the Fine Arts, instructing vocal music and theory to students in grades K–12.
As a member of the faculty at The School for Creative and Performing Arts, Mrs. Woode also taught musical theater, choir, and other vocal ensembles in addition to acting as the vocal coach for numerous SCPA productions, such as The Wiz, The King & I, and The Taming Of The Shrew. At Withrow High School, Geneva produced and directed a number of choral concerts and musicals like The Wiz, Purlie Victorious, and Annie, in addition to several plays and musicals in the local community and churches.
Because of her skills, she was requested to work as the program coordinator for the UC Center for Young Scholars, which provides exceptional and talented youngsters in our community with improved learning opportunities. For four years, Geneva was responsible for selecting teachers, creating curricula, establishing rules for student housing and enrollment, addressing the requirements of faculty, and developing and marketing the program, plus she served as the liaison between the Cincinnati Public Schools and the University of Cincinnati. Mrs. Woode has also instructed music theory classes at CCM and worked as a class demonstrator for The National Association for the Gifted.
Geneva Woode was and continues to be a well-known and respected part of Cincinnati's Fine Arts community. She was a recent 2023 Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame Honoree. She continues to uplift and inspire others and her contributions to the culture have solidified her roots in the city’s rich music history forever!
